Food production in Kakwale
Thanks to the treadle pumps, which were made available in 2012, food can now also be produced in the dry season from March to November.
During the trip of Jan Meijering and Nico van Basten to Malawi on 27 April t/m 11 May 2012 treadle pumps for proper irrigation in the dimba's were introduced. Three treadle pumps were purchased from the Land Resource Centre in Lilongwe. At three different locations along the river Kakwale irrigation pilot fields were constructed with a surface of 0.4 ha each. In these pilot fields various crops in one or two additional times can be harvested in the dry period of the year.
It is intended that the additional harvest is sold on the market, making extra money for purchase of more treadle pumps or purchase oil presses, with which effectively oil can be pressed from seeds or nuts.
